8. Tom Gorzelanny,  PIT A,  82/7,  6-3/200
A+ Carol  55.2  54  6  19  61  4.85

Low class A

1. Jacob Stevens,  ATL A,  85/3,  6-3/220
A SAL  135.0  100  7  39  140  2.27

1. Chuck Tiffany,  LA A,  85/1,  6-1/200
A SAL  99.2  76  11  40  141  3.70

3. Ryan Feierabend,  SEA A,  85/8,  6-4/200
A MWL  161.0  158  17  44  106  3.63

3. Adam Blackley,  BOS A,  85/2,  6-1/190

R+ Appy  12.0  8  0  4  22  2.25

7. Trent Peterson,  OAK A,  81/11,  6-1/170
A MWL  121.0  107  9  25  109  3.42

7. Errol Simonitsch,  MIN A,  82/8,  6-4/225

7. James Houser,  TB A,  84/12,  6-5/185

7. Jo Jo Reyes,  ATL A,  84/11,  6-2/215
A SAL  74.1  84  10  25  71  5.33

4. MIGUEL VEGA, 1b/3b, Royals
Age: 19 Ht: 6-3 Wt: 205 B-T: R-R Drafted/Signed: Royals '04 (3)
AB: 229
R: 36
H: 63
2B: 15

RBI: 44
BB: 16
SO: 74
SB: 6
CS: 1
AVG: .275
OBP: .328
SLG: .515
Kansas City's fourth-round draft pick in 2003, Vega struggled in his debut but enjoyed an all-star season this year while leading the AZL with 10 home runs.
"He made a big improvement from 2003 in all areas," Rangers manager Pedro Lopez said. "He couldn't hit the ball out of the infield last year and was an easy out. This year he was a tough out and hit the ball out of the park consistently. He couldn't catch the ball last year, either. This year he did."
Vega had the best raw power in the league and it's his bat that will carry him as he advances. He'll need to make better contact, use the whole field and be more patient at the plate after topping the league with 74 strikeouts. Vega looked more comfortable after moving from third to first base, though his plus arm will be mostly wasted at his new position.

4. BILLY BUTLER, 3b, Idaho Falls Chukars (Royals)
Age: 18 Ht: 6-2 Wt: 225 B-T: R-R Drafted/Signed: Royals '04 (1)

SLG: .596
Like DeWitt, Butler lived up to his reputation. Considered the top high school power hitter in the draft, he ranked second in the PL with 35 extra-base hits.
DeWitt outhomered Butler 12-10, though Butler has more present raw power and future power. His hitting mechanics, while unorthodox, elicit consistent, hard contact and tremendous loft. He won the batting title with a .376 average.
"The bat he has coming out of high school is obviously very attractive," Idaho Falls manager Brian Rupp said. "It's a little bit different. I don't think you necessarily teach a kid to hit the way he does. He has a toe tap and a leg kick that make his timing good. He gets the bat through the zone on time the majority of the time, and that is what is kind of scary."
Butler's barrel-chested build drew concerns from some managers and he's poor defensively. He was ambitiously drafted as a third baseman but probably will have to move to first base in his near future, though the Royals maintain they'll continue his development at third base. Scouts criticized his immaturity as well.

14. BRIAN McFALL, of, Idaho Falls Chukars (Royals)
Age: 20 Ht: 6-3 Wt: 205 B-T: R-R Drafted/Signed: Royals '03 (3)

AVG: .363
OBP: .438
SLG: .618
While statistics carry much less weight than tools in evaluating Rookie-level players, McFall's performance this summer was noteworthy. After hitting .172 in the low Class A Midwest League to start the year, he was demoted to Idaho Falls and worked diligently to improve his approach at the plate. He succeeded, as he led he PL in doubles (23), RBIs (68), extra-base hits (38), slugging (.618) and stolen bases (23).
McFall has a strong upper body, and when he extends his arms he shows plus power to all fields. He hit for a high average despite striking out 64 times in 68 games, but he'll have to make better contact at higher levels.
He has slightly above-average speed, though he's not a burner. After moving from first base to the outfield this year, he has work to do to improve his defensive skills. He profiles best as a left fielder.

1. AMBIORIX CONCEPCION, of, Brooklyn Cyclones (Mets)
Age: 20 Ht: 6-2 Wt: 180 B-T: R-R Drafted/Signed: Mets FA '00 (Dominican Republic)

As Jamestown manager Benny Castillo put it, "It's Concepcion, then the rest of the league." Two managers compared his strong, wiry, athletic frame to Vladimir Guerrero's.
Concepcion has major five-tool potential. He has a plus arm that's tailor-made for right field and the plus speed to play center and steal bases. He also plays hard and is fast enough to take the extra base if you let him.
Some managers were concerned about Concepcion's swing, saying it was long and had holes in it. But he's still just 20 and already has made considerable improvement after hitting .214-0-19 in the Rookie-level Appalachian League last year, his third as a pro. He hit for average and showed some power in the NY-P.
"He hasn't learned to work the count, but his ability to make the adjustment and wait on breaking balls has already impressed me," Brooklyn manager Tony Tijerina said. "He's starting to fill out his body, and every day he'll win a ballgame with a different tool."

2. GABY HERNANDEZ, rhp, Mets

Hernandez led the GCL with a 1.09 ERA while allowing just 40 baserunners in 50 innings. But he gave up seven earned runs--one more than he permitted in nine regular-season starts--in his most important start, lasting just 2 1/3 innings in a 9-2 pasting by the Red Sox in the GCL playoffs. He rebounded to pitch three scoreless innings after a promotion to the short-season New York-Penn League.
"He's got great poise and rises to the occasion when pressure is on the line," Mets manager Brett Butler said before Hernandez' playoff outing. "He's got command of three pitches, including a moving 92 mph fastball that he can move in and out, up and down."
Hernandez was the league's most complete pitcher. His fastball sat in the low 90s and topped out at 95 mph, while his hard, sharp curveball routinely found the strike zone.

16. Jesus Flores, c, Mets
Age: 19 Ht: 6-1 Wt: 180 B-T: R-R Drafted/Signed: Mets FA '02 (Venezuela)
AB: 141

Flores already is regarded as the best defensive catcher in the Mets system. He led GCL regulars by throwing out 44 percent of basestealers and surprised with his bat, earning all-star honors. He had batted just .244 in two seasons in the Rookie-level Venezuelan and Dominican summer leagues.
"If he can learn to hit a breaking ball, he will be a big league catcher," Butler said. "He blocks balls well, can throw out runners and can call a game."

7. K.C. HERREN, of, Rangers
Age: 19 Ht: 6-1 Wt: 197 B-T: L-R Drafted/Signed: Rangers '04 (2)

Though he failed to homer in 185 at-bats, Herren has the makings of an athletic, big league body and projects plenty of power down the road. He has good plate discipline and makes solid contact with a line-drive swing, and he should add loft to his stroke with experience.
Herren covered ground in center field adequately. A below-average arm and average speed probably will relegate him to left field, and he'll still have enough bat for that position.

13. ERIC HURLEY, rhp, Spokane Indians (Rangers)
Age: 19 Ht: 6-4 Wt: 195 B-T: R-R Drafted/Signed: Rangers '04 (1)

Like Tuiasosopo, Hurley wasn't able to repeat his Arizona League success following a promotion. His ERA wasn't pretty, and he never worked more than four innings so he didn't record a win. He assumed the added burden of following John Danks, a first-round pick out of high school who shined in a late taste of the NWL last summer. Still, some managers saw skills that give Hurley a big upside if he improves the quality of his strikes and becomes more polished.
Hurley reached 93-94 mph from a three-quarters arm slot that produced good movement. He complemented it with a solid feel for a changeup and a slider that could become at least average.
"We didn't sniff him," said Grifol, also an area scout for the Mariners. "I liked him as an amateur, and I like him as a pro."

19. MIKE NICKEAS, c, Spokane Indians (Rangers)
Age: 21 Ht: 6-0 Wt: 205 B-T: R-R Drafted/Signed: Rangers '04 (5)
AB: 233
R: 42

Nothing about Nickeas' overall game jumped out at managers, but they also had a hard time finding faults and he was regarded as at least average in nearly every category. He calls a decent game, possesses solid arm strength, displays good hands and blocks balls adequately.
Nickeas swings aggressively in the strike zone and shows power when he jumps into a pitch he wants. He can drive a ball the opposite way, but also strikes out more than some might like. He tied for third in the league in RBIs. Managers think he'll hit 10 to 20 home runs a year.
"Defensively, he's solid," Strain said. "He hit enough. I don't think he's an offensive catcher, but he's got plenty of bat to get to the big leagues."

Less than a year removed from Tommy John surgery, Nelson made a quick comeback during the spring and became the ninth overall pick in the draft. Though his two-way aspirations came to an end뾥e was armed with a mid-90s fastball before hurting his elbow뾥e has star potential at shortstop.
Nelson's short, quick righthanded swing has been likened to Gary Sheffield's뾲he gold standard of comparisons from scouts. He has good balance at the plate and allows pitches to get deep before unleashing his hands and wrists, making consistent, hard contact. He also has above-average speed.
Nelson spent much of the summer as Casper's DH in order to preserve his arm, which, naturally, was sore at times. When he played shortstop, he showed one of the best throwing arms in the league and good range. He'll need to get to grounders a little further out in front of his body.

Rated the best pure hitter among high school players in the 2004 draft, DeWitt lived up to that billing in his pro debut. He put together a 19-game hitting streak in his first month in the minors, and scouts and managers considered him the league's most polished hitter.
DeWitt showed exceptional bat speed and plus power. His swing allows the bat to stay in the strike zone for a long time. Once he learned to stay back on breaking balls, he began driving balls to all fields. He's a lefthanded hitter who can handle lefties with aplomb (.338 average), and he became more selective as the summer wore on.
A shortstop in high school, DeWitt will play third base professionally. He's raw defensively but showed improvement with experience. His arm strength, athleticism and work ethic should allow him to make the switch.

4. CRAIG WHITAKER, rhp, Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Giants)
Age: 19 Ht: 6-4 Wt: 188 B-T: R-R Drafted/Signed: Giants '03 (1)

Whitaker works in the 90-95 mph range now and stands to add velocity as he bulks up his 6-foot-4 frame. He also throws a big-breaking curveball that also can be a plus pitch.
"He's got good stuff," Salem-Keizer manager Joe Strain said, "but he's still learning how to pitch and developing his pitches."
Nothing exemplified that more than Whitaker's league-leading walks total, which accompanied his No. 2 rank in strikeouts. Command is still an issue, as is consistency with the breaking ball. He began to use his average changeup effectively as the season went on.
"He threw some fastballs against us that really exploded and if he can throw his plus secondary pitches for strikes--look out," Rogers said. "He's the typical rough-around-the-edges young pitcher, and the Giants are always good at developing that type of arm."
