[ESPN] 오클 유망주 Dan Meyer

Dan Meyer
Oakland Athletics
Position: LHP Height: 6-3 Weight: 190 Born: 7/3/81 Bats: Right Throws: Left

Background
Dan Meyer was the key prospect acquired by Oakland in Thursday's trade that sent Tim Hudson to Atlanta. Selected by the Braves in the supplemental first round in 2002, Meyer was an effective college pitcher at James Madison and has carried this forward as a professional. The Braves generally prefer to draft and develop high school talent, but felt they could not pass Meyer up with the 34th overall pick that year. Meyer emerged quickly as a top prospect, doing well at every level of pro ball, and impressing scouts and coaches in two major league innings last year. He is one of the best southpaw prospects in the game.

Scouting report
Early in his career, there was some consideration of making Meyer a reliever, but he's shown he has the repertoire, durability and mental attributes of a starting pitcher. Meyer has plus velocity for a southpaw, throwing his fastball a consistent 90-93 mph. His heater has unusually good sinking action from a lefty, and he mixes it well with a tight slider, a curveball, a splitter, and a standard changeup. His biggest need coming into '04 was to improve the changeup, which always has been promising but was erratic in the past. He met this goal, giving him a complete arsenal. Meyer has good command and is an efficient pitcher with little wasted effort in his delivery. He isn't afraid to throw inside but also can paint a corner when needed. His overall level of athleticism is good, which helps him with fielding and holding runners. He also is intelligent and competitive. The bottom line is that Meyer has few flaws as a pitcher and has worked hard to correct those he has.

Performance
You can't find anything wrong with Meyer's statistical set. His K/BB, K/IP, and H/IP ratios are all strong, and showed very little deterioration as he faced better competition up the professional ladder. His home run allowed rate is also low, another positive sign. His 19-19 career record in the minor leagues might not be great, but his 2.71 ERA and 381-87 K/BB in 352 minor league innings are much better indicators of his talent level.

Year Team Level G GS IP H R ER HR BB SO W-L SV ERA
2003 Rome A 15 15 81.2 76 35 26 6 15 95 4-4 0 2.87
  Myrtle Beach A 13 13 78.1 69 29 25 7 17 63 3-6 0 2.87
2004 Greenville AA 14 13 65.0 50 17 16 1 12 86 6-3 0 2.22
  Richmond AAA 12 11 61.1 62 23 19 6 25 60 3-3 0 2.79
  Atlanta NL 2 0 2.0 2 0 0 0 1 1 0-0 0 0.00

K/BB, K/IP, and H/IP

Health record
Meyer has had no major health concerns. With a consistent delivery and an efficient pitching approach, his injury risk is no higher than that of any other pitcher his age. It is likely somewhat lower in fact, although the risk is always present.

What to expect
With Hudson out of the picture, Meyer will have a good chance to win a starting rotation job in Oakland. He has no major weaknesses, many strengths and is quite comparable to a young Barry Zito or Mark Mulder. If everything goes according to plan, Meyer should be a leading candidate for Rookie of the Year. Things do not always go according to plan, of course, especially when young pitchers are involved. But the key is to load the odds in your favor as much as possible. For Meyer, the odds look as good as they can be. Both the scouting reports and numbers agree that he is a premium prospect.

A supplemental first-round pick (34th overall) in 2002 out of James Madison, he was the highest college draft pick for the Braves since they took Mike Kelly second overall in 1991.

AVG: .151

Hernandez led the GCL with a 1.09 ERA while allowing just 40 baserunners in 50 innings. But he gave up seven earned runs--one more than he permitted in nine regular-season starts--in his most important start, lasting just 2 1/3 innings in a 9-2 pasting by the Red Sox in the GCL playoffs. He rebounded to pitch three scoreless innings after a promotion to the short-season New York-Penn League.

"He's got great poise and rises to the occasion when pressure is on the line," Mets manager Brett Butler said before Hernandez' playoff outing. "He's got command of three pitches, including a moving 92 mph fastball that he can move in and out, up and down."

Hernandez was the league's most complete pitcher. His fastball sat in the low 90s and topped out at 95 mph, while his hard, sharp curveball routinely found the strike zone.

16. Jesus Flores, c, Mets
Age: 19 Ht: 6-1 Wt: 180 B-T: R-R Drafted/Signed: Mets FA '02 (Venezuela)

Flores already is regarded as the best defensive catcher in the Mets system. He led GCL regulars by throwing out 44 percent of basestealers and surprised with his bat, earning all-star honors. He had batted just .244 in two seasons in the Rookie-level Venezuelan and Dominican summer leagues.

"If he can learn to hit a breaking ball, he will be a big league catcher," Butler said. "He blocks balls well, can throw out runners and can call a game."

18. CARLOS GOMEZ, of, Mets
Age: 18 Ht: 6-4 Wt: 190 B-T: R-R Drafted/Signed: Mets FA '02 (Dominican Republic)

AB: 71
R: 10

HR: 0
RBI: 11
BB: 2
SO: 9
SB: 9
CS: 1
AVG: .268
OBP: .303
SLG: .361

Gomez didn't tear up the GCL after being demoted from the Appy League, but his five-tool ability caught the eye of every Eastern Division manager.

"He's the total package," DeFreites said. "He reminds me of a young Raul Mondesi. He's got a great arm, power, solid outfield skills and can run. Everything. To me, he's the number one prospect in the league."

Gomez' power is the least advanced of all his tools but should improve as he learns the strike zone and fills out his 6-foot-2, 178-pound frame. More selectivity would help as well, because he drew just two walks in 74 plate appearances.

New York Mets
by Marty Noble

No Limit Soldier

NEW YORK—Blake McGinley might be a 26-year-old lefthanded reliever, but the Mets are not inclined to pigeonhole him yet.

So, although McGinley has proven more effective against lefthanded hitters than he has versus their righthanded brethren, the Mets aren't willing to point him toward specialization.

"He's still learning," minor league director Kevin Morgan said. "We don't want to limit his experience. We know he handles lefties. The more righthanded hitters he faces, the better he'll be against them."

So McGinley was in Venezuela, working in middle relief for Magallanes.

Morgan called McGinley "one of those pitchers who keeps getting outs no matter what level we put him at."

That's what he did in 2004. He went 9-2, 3.72 with 83 strikeouts in 73 Double-A innings, holding lefties to a .207 average and righties to a .229 clip. He went 3-3, 4.05 with 28 strikeouts in 27 innings with Triple-A Norfolk after being promoted in late July.

It marked the fourth straight season McGinley had registered at least one strikeout per inning since joining the Mets as a 21st-round pick out of Texas Tech in 2001.

McGinley has known nothing but success in pro ball. He has a cumulative 28-8, 2.75 mark overall, with 331 strikeouts and a .213 opponent batting average in 292 career innings.

"He's not overpowering, but he has above-average command," Morgan said. "His curveball is his best pitch, particularly against lefthanded hitters. He throws a changeup and a fastball and mixes them intelligently. And we like what he's shown us lately."

2004 Draft Report Cards: NL East
By Jim Callis
November 3, 2004

NEW YORK METS

Best Pro Debut: RHP Gaby Hernandez (3) was named the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League's top pitching prospect and won the ERA title, going 4-3, 1.03 with a 64-12 K-BB ratio in 53 innings. SS Sean Henry (20) made the GCL all-star team after hitting .282-4-30 with 10 steals. RHP Michael Devaney (23) used a three-pitch mix to go 5-0, 1.95 at short-season Brooklyn.

Best Athlete: Henry runs well and has more pop than expected from a 5-foot-10, 155-pounder. He has arm strength as well, though his throws need to be more accurate and he may have to move to another position. OF Brahiam Maldonado (10) has all-around tools and was a top youth basketball player in Puerto Rico.

Best Pure Hitter: 1B Mike Carp (9) has a nice line-drive stroke from the left side of the plate. He batted .267-4-26 in the GCL. Henry also shows promise.

Best Raw Power: OF Caleb Stewart (22) went deep five times in 25 games in low Class A. He played at Kentucky, as did the area scout who signed him, Rod Henderson.

Fastest Runner: OF B.J. Suggs (27) can fly down the line, getting from the left side of the plate to first base in 3.95 seconds. He's still learning how to use his speed.

Best Defensive Player: C Aaron Hathaway (4) is athletic for his position and has the arm to shut down the running game. He led the short-season New York-Penn League by throwing out 39 percent of basestealers.

Best Fastball: The Mets still expect to sign RHP Philip Humber (1), the third overall pick, but it might not happen until spring training. He hit 97 mph while at Rice, a tick ahead of RHP Matt Durkin (2). Hernandez has the best command of his fastball, and he already touches 94 mph with sinking, riding action at age 18.

Best Breaking Ball: New York ranked Humber's 12-to-6 curveball as the best breaking pitch in the entire draft. Among the players already under contract, RHP Scott Hyde (7) has a hard slider.

Most Intriguing Background: 1B/DH Jim Burt Jr.'s (19) father was a Pro Bowl defensive lineman who won Super Bowls with the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers. Hyde was MVP of the NCAA Division III World Series after pitching George Fox (Ore.) to the championship.

Closest To The Majors: Once he signs, Humber may not need much more than a year before he's ready to help the Mets.

Best Late-Round Pick: The Mets are pleased with Henry, Stewart, Devaney and RHP Mike Swindell (29). Swindell has an average fastball and a plus curveball.

The One Who Got Away: RHP Brad Meyers (14) should become a premium draft pick after three years at Loyola Marymount. He's projectable at 6-foot-6 and 190 pounds and already can touch 92-93 mph with his sinker.

Assessment: After trading their two most advanced pitching prospects in ill-advised midseason deals, the Mets at least can take solace in adding Humber, Durkin and Hernandez. The pitchers in this crop are much more impressive than the position players.
